There is a sudden and explicit way to experience our obligations to others, but it usually requires some kind of loss. Unlike the cultures and congregations that form the pillars of our identities, these are incidental communities. At the core of our national debate about immigration is a dispute over the limits of these communities. In a very basic sense, this means a comprehensive defense of our incidental communities.
